DİYARBAKIR - The number of prisoners who went on hunger strike for fear for their lives increased to 18.
The hunger strike of prisoners Mehmet Süleyman Ucakan, Turhan İlbaş, Hüseyin Karadaş, Habib Güler and Ahmet Arif Yöyler that started on January 17 following the suspicious death of Vedat Erkmen in Tekirdağ No 2 Prison continues. It was learned that two more prisoners went on a hunger strike with the same concern. The number of prisoners on hunger strike increased to 8. The prisoners demand an end to the violations of rights and arbitrary practices.
Mehmet Ucakan who spoke to his family on the phone told that his basic needs are not met in prison. Ucukan said: "They are not giving us salt, sugar and lemon for us to maintain the hunger strike. Ucukan also stated that their wards are being raided regularly, strip search is imposed on the prisonersand their belongings are confiscated for no reason.
