BACKGROUND

R. P., an 8th grade student studying at Bahariye Secondary School in Kadıköy, Istanbul, was subjected to discrimination and racist treatment because his name is Kurdish. A disciplinary investigation was launched against R.P., who was subjected to racist treatment, after an argument with other students at school. While no action was taken against other students, R.P. He will appear before the disciplinary committee on Monday.

Speaking to our agency about the issue, the boy's father, Harun P., said:"My son has been in this school for 3 years and that he is constantly being exposed to racism, both because of his name and because he is Kurdish. My son had a similar discussion 2 years ago and he had hit a marble and injured his head, the father said that the school administration considered this situation 'normal'. The teachers said to my son that his name is very difficult. They cannot pronounce this name and asked my son  whether they can call him 'Reno'. The school administration put pressure on us to enroll our son in another school." An official we spoke to at Bahariye Secondary School, whom we called to inquire about the allegations, claimed that the allegations in question were unfounded.
