ISTANBUL - Stating that the way to democratization is through the solution of the Kurdish issue, Prof. Dr. Fatma Gök, one of the signatories of the "Call to Peace" declaration said: "I think Abdullah Öcalan will make a great contribution to peace."
78 people, including politicians, journalists, intellectuals and artists, came together on October 28 for a democratic and peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue and announced to the public the declaration titled "Call for Peace", of which they were signatories. In the statement, it was emphasized that "Our effort is about seeking peace and the courage to be a peace traveler", and a call was made for the end of the isolation imposed on PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan and for the democratic solution of the Kurdish issue. Prof. Dr. Fatma Gök, who was among the signatories, evaluated the declaration.
DEMOCRATIZATION
Stating that the Kurdish issue, which has not been resolved since the past, is at a point that affects all peoples today, Gök said: "The Kurdish issue is not only experienced in Kurdistan. When this becomes an issue for all of us, then we can move forward. We all need to sit down and think about this issue."
Emphasizing that the way to democratize Turkey is through the solution of the Kurdish issue, Gök said: "We actually went through this process. Kurdish politics made great efforts to solve this issue and democratize Turkey, but they prevented it."
THE MOST IMPORTANT ACTOR: ABDULLAH ÖCALAN
Drawing attention that the most important actor in the solution of the Kurdish issue is PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan, Gök said: "I think that Öcalan, who is seen as the leader of the Kurdish people, will make a great contribution to peace. When the state abandoned its peace policy and turned to war, Öcalan's contribution disappeared. I think Öcalan should also be included in this initiated process."
