WAN - Havin Aşkan, who was 1.76 metres tall, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on a door handle. The family filed a complaint against the specialised sergeant, to whom their daughter was married, on charges of "delibrate killing".

Havin Aşkan Tektaş (25), a mother of 1 child living in Bornova district of Izmir, died under suspicious circumstances on 24 December 2024. Specialist Sergeant İbrahim Tektaş, to whom Havin Aşkan Tektaş had been married for 4 years, called the family on the date of the incident and said, "Your daughter hanged herself with a towel on the door handle of the room".

Havin Aşkan Tektaş's body was buried in Elkê (Beytüşebap) district of her hometown Şirnex (Şırnak). The specialised sergeant she was married to did not attend the funeral.

According to the autopsy report, bruising was found on both hands and lower extremities, and bruising on the front of the body where there was no pressure. In addition, it was stated that there was an ascending telem starting from the right front part of the neck area and extending under both ears.

CRIMINAL COMPLAINT

Havin Aşkan Tektaş's father Mustafa Aşkan filed a criminal complaint to Beytüşşebap Public Prosecutor's Office on the charge of "delibrate killing" against Specialist Sergeant Tektaş, whom he held responsible for the death of his daughter. In his statement to the prosecutor's office, father Aşkan pointed to the conversation he had with the specialised sergeant and said, "He informed me that my daughter committed suicide by tying her writing on the door handle. However, this statement of my son-in-law seemed very contradictory to me. Even if my daughter committed suicide in a 1+1 flat, it does not fit in my logic in any way that a person who commits suicide does not realise the sounds that a person who commits suicide will make in the dire need of life, or if he/she knocks on the door or makes any noise, that another person in the house does not notice the sounds."

'MY DAUGHTER IS 1.76 TALL'

Father Aşkan stated that his daughter was 1.76 metres tall and could not commit suicide by tying her writing on the door handle, and said that the specialised sergeant made her death "look like suicide". Father Aşkan said, "No nail marks or similar wounds or marks on the suspect's body that could have been caused by the resistance of my daughter during the killing of my daughter have been detected and investigated."

SPECIALISED SERGEANT: HER FEET WERE TOUCHING THE GROUND

Expert Sergeant Tektaş, whose statement was taken as a suspect, claimed that he woke up with the sound of his child crying and when he got up, Havin Aşkan Tektaş hanged herself on the door handle. Tektaş said, "My wife tied her scarves to the bedroom door and hung herself by her neck. I immediately rescued her and laid her on the floor. I touched her once to see if she was alive. However, I realised that she was dead. When I saw her, her feet were touching the floor."

LAWYER DERE: THE FILE AND THE PROCESS ARE NOT UNATTENDED

Uğur Dere, the lawyer of the family, said that the case is ongoing in Izmir and that they have demands for the investigation to be carried out effectively. Lawyer Dere stated that they requested the prosecutor to analyse the phone calls. Dere emphasised that the file was "not unattended" and that they would closely follow the process.

APPLICATION TO STAR WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

On the other hand, Havin Aşkan Tektaş's family applied to the STAR Women's Association in Wan in order to clarify the suspicious death and to follow the process more effectively. The family requested solidarity and legal support from the association.
