ISTANBUL - Stating that a minimum democracy is necessary for the solution of the Kurdish issue, Prof. Dr. Baskın Oran said, "Everyone who does not support the AKP and the palace is silenced. There can be no process in such an environment."

Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan's "Call for Peace and Democratic Society", which was shared with the public on 27 February, continues to set the agenda of the country. Following the call, which resonated widely all over the world, the PKK unilaterally declared a ceasefire. However, the state and the government have not taken any srepts although 23 days have passed.

Political Scientist Prof. Dr. Baskın Oran, evaluating the discussions on the process, pointed to the necessity of a minimum democracy for the solution of the problem.

'EVERYONE IS SILENCED'

"The Kurdish issue is undoubtedly Turkey's biggest issue," said Oran and added, "In order for such a big issue to be concluded with peace that is acceptable to both sides, there must be a minimum freedom of expression in Turkey, in other words democracy. Now, on the contrary, Kurds and CHP supporters are being silenced. Everyone who does not support the AKP and the palace is being silenced. There can be no process in such an environment. First there must be a minimum democracy. They are even putting journalists in jail. They make many allegations and prepare files for mayors. No problem can be solved in such environments."

OPERATION AGAINST MUNICIPALITIES

Referring to the operations against the municipalities elected with the "Urban Consensus", Oran said: "They cannot prevent DEM Party and CHP on the grounds of Urban Consensus, because the supporters of both parties have done and will do what is necessary."
