Violations increase in Serhat prisons, isolation deepens

WAN - An IHD report on prisons in the Serhat region has pointed out that isolation has deepened and violations have increased. 

As a reflection of the lack of news about PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan, isolation and rights violations are increasing in all other prisons. Human Rights Association (IHD) Wan, Tetwan and Bedlîs branches also visited prisons in Serhat (Eastern Anatolia Region) provinces and recorded the violations that prisoners were subjected to. 
 
IĞDIR TYPE S 
 
It is stated that a prisoner in Iğdır Type S Closed Prison went on hunger strike on August 1 due to prison conditions and isolation policy and ended his hunger strike in September after negotiations. According to the information given by the prisoner to IHD, searches are conducted in a degrading manner, prisoners are forced to stand during meetings with the administration, guards group prisoners according to “crime types”, demands from the administration are not accepted, petitions are left unanswered and prisoners are not taken to the infirmary even in an emergency. 
 
Another prisoner interviewed in the same prison is on the list of seriously ill prisoners. The prisoner stated that the left side of his brain has lost 90% of its function, that he has arthritis and rheumatism in both feet, that he has a prostate disease, that it is very difficult for him to stay in prison alone, that he has difficulty in maintaining his life and that he maintains his life with the support of other prisoners, that he was referred to a hospital to get a committee report, but the reports have not yet arrived. 
 
ERZURUM DUMLU HIGH SECURITY PRISON NO 2
 
The prisoner interviewed in Erzurum Dumlu High Security Prison No. 2 said that they were held in rooms for 3 people, that the physical space of the wards was narrow, that strip searches were imposed on them and that they did not go to the hospital because they did not accept this practice. The prisoner, who was wounded in the back, stated that he was not treated and that hospital transfers were made only after 6-7 months.
A prisoner named S.A. stated that he fainted all the time but the disease could not be diagnosed and that he was subjected to humiliating searches every time he entered and left the ward and was forced to take off his shoes. 
 
The prisoner stated that a quota of 15 books at most in 2 months was imposed on the purchase of books, and that communication tools such as newspapers and magazines were also restricted, and that prisoners whose execution periods had expired were prevented from being released by the administrative and observation board. 
 
PATNOS TYPE L 
 
The prisoner HRA members interviewed in Patnos Type L Closed Prison stated that the wards are for 19 people and that he should have been transferred to Wan for treatment due to a burst eardrum, but this was not done. The prisoner stated that the drinking water problem continues and that clean and potable water does not flow from the taps, and that the food is not hygienic and is served very little.
 
The prisoner, who is registered to the Iranian population, stated that he had to pay 340 Liras for a 10-minute phone call and that he could not meet with his family because they could not afford it economically. 
 
VAN TYPE F
 
The prisoner interviewed in Van Type F Closed Prison stated that he suffers from high blood pressure, that he was referred to infirmary and hospital late, and that medication was not provided on time. It was also stated that other ill prisoners in the prison are also in serious condition due to the attitude and behavior of the prison.
